Weekend preview

byu zoobies

So the zoobies have a tough game on their schedule at home this weekend: Eastern Illinois. This is a no win situation for the zoobies. They have to win by 50, just to stay even par. If this is a close game, or better, if they lose, it will be total chaos amongst the byu fans out there. And it will be another enjoyable week of listening to byu fans whining about their lousy football team on the local sports talk radio shows.

Utah vs Utah State

During the McBride years this game was frightening. Though we should have destroyed Utah State from a talent standpoint, we managed to lose that game a few times. In the Urban years this type of loss simply didn’t happen.

So this week will be a test of a different sort. Everyone knows we have more horses than USU, but do we have the brains and the coaching to use them correctly?

Go Utes!

Utes defeat Arizona 27-24

Ahh football season is finally here. I was very excited and curious about the new Ute season for 2005. We’ve lost a ton of great players and we have a new head coach.

For the game I’d give the Utes a “B” grade. But it was the first game of the season and they will definitely improve as the season progresses.

The first quarter was terrible. Both teams were obviously nervous. But as the game progressed the play got better on both sides of the ball. At one point we had a 27-10 lead. I was really starting to sweat in the 4th quarter when Arizona brought it back to a 3 point game. But a couple of great long runs by Quinton Ganther in our final possesion sealed the game.

The good:

1. O Line was protecting the QB fairly well
2. Ganther was a great runner with around 130 yards rushing
3. Johnson had over 300 yards passing with no INT’s
4. The defense held when it needed, forced a couple of fumbles and ran back an INT for a TD

The bad:
1. The offense looked a little confused, but got better as the game went on.
2. Johnson needed to run when he saw open pasture in front of him, rather than passing.
3. We almost let them make a great comeback after leading by 17.
4. The kicking game still may not be very good, just like last year.

GO UTES!
